How we were blessed for my Lady Captains Day this year when we enjoyed glorious wall to wall sunshine & the course in superb condition. My biggest worry was keeping the food cold!

Texas Scramble was the format for the day as I was determined I wanted to make it as inclusive as possible for all handicappers. We had 38 ladies sign up to play: 35 for 18 holes & just three ladies opting for the 9 hole competition. Those three played an individual Stableford.

The winning team was Doreen Andrews, Jane Bramah & Ann Turner with a net score of 55.35. The runners up were Claire Village, Bev Taylor, Pat Bown & Glinys Capewell with 55.50. In 3rd place was Lucy Beverley, Annie McClimont, Daphne Spencer & Marilyn Curtis with 57.15. Helena Gaffey won the Stableford with 15 points on count back. As all three ladies scored 15 it was obviously a very tight game.

Nearest the line on the 8th was won by Helen Spon Smith. Nearest the pin on 18th was won by Helena Gaffey. This one is always a good spectator sport for the people in the tent!

As always, a halfway house was in operation, stocked by some delicious cakes made by the ladies & of course a much needed cold drink to keep them going for the back nine. The tent looked resplendent with the most amazing bunch of bright pink peonies that Jimmy Link kindly gave us, freshly picked from his garden.

Following the match picnic chairs were unpacked & we settled down outside our tent to enjoy a few canapes & a glass of fizz. Injured golfers, unable to play on the day, joined us for the presentation which was conducted with bright blue skies as our back drop… & much frivolity.

To round the day off we had a light hearted putting competition on the 18th by which time some of the ladies had got stuck into the refreshments & were less than enthusiastic! About 20 ladies took part & it was won by Lucy Beverley.

As Lady Captain I would like to thank Tony Pope & his team, the committee & all the ladies that supported me whether it be making cakes or giving advice. Special thanks goes to Tricia Sanderson for her invaluable help on the day, Annie McClimont & Alison Lunt for sorting the handicaps & cards respectively. Geoff Fearn who made the flags for the putting competition & lastly to my husband for all his encouragement & support.
